HemCon Dressings work by becoming extremely adherent when in contact with blood. This adhesive-like action seals the wound. HemCon products are fabricated from chitosan, a naturally occurring, bio-compatible polysaccharide. Because chitosan has a positive charge, it attracts red blood cells, which have a negative charge. The red blood cells create a seal over the wound as they are drawn into the bandage, forming a very tight, coherent seal. HemCon Dressings have been proven safe and effective for patients on anticoagulants.
The HemCon Dental Dressing is an oral wound dressing intended as a physical barrier for temporary protection of oral mucosal tissue and to provide pain relief.
HemCon Dental Dressings are simple to use, but key points need to be followed for the dressings to be most effective. Please check the product size you are interested in for specific instructions for use.

What are the HemCon dental dressings used for?
The HemCon Dental Dressings are an oral wound dressing intended as a physical barrier for temporary protection of oral mucosal tissue and to provide pain relief. The dressing is designed for use by oral surgeons, periodontists, and general practitioners to aid in extractions, and other oral trauma and surgery procedures.
How do HemCon dental dressings work?
The chitosan in the HemCon Dental Dressing has a positive charge, and attracts red blood cells, which have a negative charge. The red blood cells create a seal over the wound as they are drawn into the dressing and stabilize the wound surface.
If a dressing is opened, but not used, can it be saved for a later use? No, sterility and efficacy will be compromised if the product is not used when opened.
Since the dressing works by interacting with blood, will the dressing work on patients taking anticoagulants?
During our clinical trial, patients on anticoagulants (Aspirin and Coumadin) were treated with the HemCon Bandages. All dressings were effective.
Is there a problem using this product on people with shrimp or shellfish allergies?
HemCon products use chitosan derived from shrimp shells. HemCon Dental Dressings are made from the HemCon Bandage. There have been no known allergic reactions or adverse events reported as a result of using the HemCon Bandage since distribution began in 2003.
HemCon Medical Technologies, Inc. has results from a shellfish allergy study conducted by its chitosan supplier which demonstrates that, out of 221 individuals with suspected hypersensitivity, including 8 individuals with known shellfish allergies, none demonstrated any dermal sensitivity when pricked with a chitosan test solution. However, since chitosan is extracted from the shells of shrimp and other shellfish, individuals with known shellfish allergies should exercise caution in the use of products containing chitosan.
Where can I buy HemCon dental dressings?
